A Brief History of Corsets (The Early Lingerie Costume)
Before there was the lingerie costume, there was the corset. Sure, it is no where near as sexy as lingerie costumes, but it was popular not so long ago.
The purpose of a corset is to cinch the waist and support the breasts, in an effort to create an ideal womanly torso. They were first seen around the 16th and 17th centuries. These early versions, which were called "payre of bodies," actually flattened breasts instead of supported them. These could not possibly have been comfortable!
Corsets continued to be worn, and gained in popularity, in the 18th and 19th centuries. Fortunately for women, these form of stays, as they were known, were much less constricting than earlier versions. The purpose for stays in the 18th century was more about supporting breasts than about slimming tummies and waists.
The Victorian era saw a renewed interest in corsets. These, though, look like they were torturous. They were very much hour-glass shaped, and appear to have been very constricting to women who chose to wear them.
All in all, corsets have had a sordid, and often painful, history for the women who have worn them. It should come as no wonder that today's woman would much rather wear a lingerie costume!
